Located in the heart of the Ozarks, Branson combines small-town charm with big-city music and entertainment. Known as one of Missouri's top attractions, Branson was first settled in the early 1800s as a stop along the White River, just east of the present historic downtown area. The town spread quickly westward, and by the 1950s and '60s, a variety of music shows were opening, playing to tourists who came to visit The White River.
Today, Hwy 76 is a year-round entertainment Mecca, with more than 40 theaters producing shows to fit every taste and schedule. Choose morning, afternoon, or evening performances, and take in everything from country, rock, and pop to comedy, drama, and variety shows.
Downtown, the White River (now known as Lake Taneycomo is now home to the Branson Landing and Hilton hotel and Convention Center, were you can enjoy a top of the line shopping and dining experience . Take a stroll through the historic Downtown Branson were there are a variety of antique shops and cafes.
In fact, outlying districts offer busy outlet malls and several theme parks, including Silver Dollar City and Celebration City, and Shepherd of the Hills theme park. On the quieter side, there’s also 62-acre Stockstill Park boasts Roark Creek, open meadows, picnic tables, playgrounds. If you like to fish, try a visit to the Tablerock fish hatchery. Learn about area wildlife and feed the trout (great for kids!).
There are also several annual festivals, such as the Midnight Cruise, the Veteran’s Parade and numerous street-fairs. The family-friendly Branson Motorcycle rally always draws a good crowd. The Area Festival of Lights, which runs November through the New Year, transforms Branson into a spectacular winter wonderland with over ten million lights displayed in a multitude of holiday themes.
With so many exciting shows and attractions in Branson, it’s easy to forget all of the wonderful outdoor activities available in the area. Home to three lakes and the Ozarks, there are plenty of nature-based activities to take advantage of.
The crystal clear waters and pristine conditions of Table Rock Lake, Lake Taneycomo, and Bull Shoals Lake draw anglers from around the world. Lake Taneycomo, stocked annually with over 750,000 rainbow trout, has been heralded as, “one of the best trout streams in America.” Table Rock Lake, the perfect spot for bass fishing, is home to several fishing tournaments, including major B.A.S.S. tournaments.
If fishing isn’t your cup of tea, there are several other ways to take advantage of the beautiful lakes of Branson. Boats are commonly rented out for a day of sight-seeing around the lake. Those who want a little more action can also rent skis, jet skis, kayaks, and even scuba gear.
Off of the water and up into the mountains there is also a lot of fun to be had. Explore the scenic Ozarks on one of many well marked trails, or hire a guide for an informative hike. Mountain bike rentals are available for an exhilarating and challenging experience, plus there are several caverns just waiting to be explored!
